History of Similipal
Similipal, located in the Mayurbhanj district of Odisha, is one of India’s most beautiful and ancient forest regions. The name Similipal comes from the abundance of “Simul” (silk cotton) trees found in the area. Once the hunting ground of the royal family of Mayurbhanj, it was later declared a wildlife sanctuary in 1979 and a tiger reserve under Project Tiger in 1973.
In 1980, Similipal became a national park, and later, in 2009, it was recognised as part of the UNESCO World Network of Biosphere Reserves. The reserve covers around 2,750 square kilometres, home to majestic tigers, elephants, leopards, deer, and over 200 species of birds.
Today, Similipal is a symbol of Odisha’s natural heritage — attracting nature lovers, wildlife photographers, and adventure seekers from across India.
